My curly hair has always been something that I have hated all my life. I remember looking at all the girls and wanting to have straight hair like the rest of them. Instead I used to think that I was cursed with extremely curly hair but then I realized that I was really blessed. I have always liked my hair to be straight so I blow dry, flat iron, and try anything to make my hair straight. It’s so much work to have it straight that by the time I went to College I just didn’t care anymore. In the end, I embraced my curls and have learned to enjoy and better manage my curls.
Now, don’t get me wrong, my curls have a mind of their own. It’s like I have to tame this hair everyday or else I would look like I had a hair wig. There are some horror stories of my hair. Especially the one when my dearest roomie gave me a haircut and I looked like a poodle. What was I thinking to let someone else who had no experience cut my hair? But, life is funny that way, you learn from your mistakes. You really have to get to know your hair. I don’t just use one product anymore. I use like three different products on my hair so that it can look frizz free.
I can recommend the best products that worked for my hair but please keep in mind that everyone’s hair is different. Over the years, I have tried countless of mousse and gel but either one left my hair too stiff and the other too frizzy. My new love is cream because it fights the frizz and leaves your curls looking soft and shiny; and I love the wavy look. If you are looking for more defined curls, I tend to mix gel with cream or sometimes mousse with cream. It really depends how your hair is behaving that day.
The tricks that I have learned to manage my curls are:
1. Don’t use regular shampoo. My favorite shampoo is DevaCurl no poo because it has no alcohol so it won’t dry your hair. You can wash your hair as many times as you wish and your hair won’t get dry. Here is what it looks like:
2. Conditioner has to be your BFF so your hair won’t get damaged. Believe me, my hair has gone through some serious damage and it takes longer to repair all the damage that you do to your hair. I use the Devacurl conditioner and the Nunaat Leave in Conditioner.
Over the years I have finally realized that you have to embrace your curls and love them. The more you love them the more you will learn to style them. Accept your curls and rock them!
